Jackson Pollock, a Springs Store regular once low on cash, convinced the store’s owners to accept a modest painting as payment for a bag of groceries. The groceries are long gone, but the painting now hangs in Paris at the Pompidou Centre, Europe’s largest modern art museum. The Springs Store stood for over 100 years before it counted Pollock as a customer, having been built in 1844 as the neighborhood’s first post office and general store. Today it’s a true East End relic offering quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of East Hampton. For the full experience, order a big breakfast or lunch sandwich and relax in one of the comfy Adirondack chairs on the porch or picnic tables overlooking Accabonac Creek out back.
